Star anise is an aromatic spice with a liquorice-like flavour. It’s typically added whole to infuse dishes while they cook. The star-shaped spice adds warm aniseed notes to stews and noodle soups. 

Star anise is a key ingredient in Chinese cooking. It’s used in marinades, stir fries and braised dishes with beef and pork. Ground star anise is one of the main flavours in Chinese five spice.

This fragrant spice is also used in Indian cooking. It’s an essential component of the spice blend, garam masala. In southeast Asia, you will find star anise in soups like tom yum and pho.

Star anise lends aniseed sweetness to desserts and hot drinks, too. You can use it to flavour poached pears and compotes made with seasonal fruit. In the winter months, it’s a must-have spice for mulled wine and cider.

Store in an airtight container in a dark, dry place.
